Family Friday Five: New Book Release for Kids, Family Dinner Thoughts & more

I am so excited because I finally, FINALLY get to break out my new Costco puffy vest and go camping this weekend with the kids. According to all of my yoga training and education, I have a lot of rajas energy and am a total pitta girl. Plus, I am a Scorpio. This all means I run hot and hate hot weather (or, at least, it all gives me lots of excuses to complain about being hot). So I say: BRING ON FALL!

We’ve been working on enjoying the season like crazy. We’ve slowed down on house projects, I don’t think intentionally but simply because of time and resources (burn out is real when it comes to home renovation) and it has been nice to calm down a little – although, of course, sometimes not making progress feels painful, too. But we slapped up some fake spider webs to decorate for the season and now we can’t even see it anyhow. Winning!

Anyhow, back to our Family Friday Five this week…

Our Family Friday Five this week includes:

1  I have shared the Rick Riordan Presents series before, but it is worth mentioning again as some new ones have come out! There is a second Aru Shah, a second Storm Runner, and a new one entirely! We are beyond excited at our house. I look forward to these as much as my kids do.

2  The new Cultivate What Matters PowerSheets have been revealed, and release date is coming up October 16th. I can’t share enough how useful I have found these to be in my life this past year. The 2020 PowerSheets Collection Guide has me very excited with some of the changes made this year. I can’t wait for someone in my family to gift me one of these for Christmas (hint hint!). 3  This article on The Atlantic about family dinner and meal prep really hit home for me:

“Women now devote a little more than half the average time per day cooking that they did in 1965. Men offset some of that labor by cooking a bit more on average, but their increased time in the kitchen is not nearly enough to make up the difference.

This net loss in meal time can beget a nagging tension. There’s that lingering moralistic pressure that it’s important for you to cook wholesome food, sit down with people you care about, breathe, enjoy. But for many people, the trade-offs it would take to get there push the ideal dinner farther and farther out of reach. This can weigh especially hard on parents, who often simply don’t have the time that preparing family meals requires. “

But what’s the solution, really? I still do my weekly real-life meal planning (this task goes on my PowerSheets every week) but it still requires significant effort and time.

4 We’re heading out camping this weekend, but the night-time weather went from summer to winter in two days, so we’re a little worried about it being *too* cold in the tent at night, Anyone have any experience with these? Safe or not?

5  Brene is back, and once again changing the world with words:

“I need to make sure my anger is a catalyst born of love, not justification for causing pain when I’m in pain.”

Our Favorite Soup Recipes

We love fall soup season (well, Mr. and Mrs. Family Trip do, the Bug and the Bean don't get as excited). Forget keto and Whole30, give me that potato ranch soup!!

We hope you have a wonderful fall-ish weekend, regardless of what you do (although, if it is something amazing that we need to try, let us know via comment or message). And remember: the best trip is a family one!
