The Family Trip is our online spot dedicated to supporting and encouraging families in an active, healthy, and traveling lifestyle. We didn’t drop out, roadschool, become digital nomads, or even homeschool. Instead, we’ve discovered how to live a full, rich life where we are.

We’re based in the mountains of Virginia, where life treats us good. We have many adventures at home, but we also love to travel the world.

We think a traditional lifestyle can still be full of great adventure.

We think families come in all different shapes and sizes, but family means the world.

Been thinking about 2024 and here’s the thing: I *definitely* overconsumed on travel. Miami, Las Vegas, Türkiye, Stowe, Switzerland + Italy + Austria + Liechtenstein + Germany, Mexico. It was a LOT of travel. It taxed our checkbook and required a lot of days away from home (and lots of time off of work).

Obviously, it was worth it and I have no regrets. But I also don’t think it’s doable again at that pace in 2025. We’ve got a teen who starts driving and college visits, and another teen who loves his travel soccer team and going to the Y with friends.

So when I think about why I love travel so much, it really isn’t about checking boxes on some silly “places you must see” list or playing the “how many countries have you been to” game.

I travel because I love connecting with other humans a ton. When I travel, the only thing on my mind is experiencing everything around me to the fullest while in relationship and community.

When I travel I feel full on life.

Can I do this at home? Can I acquire that feeling while still doing the routine working-mom thing?

I guess we’re going to find out!

For decades I have wanted to try to be in a cast in musical theater - I love the combination of dance and music. I believe that musical theater puts feelings and emotions into a container that spills over in ways that heal the human soul and create visceral experiences. Plus, with a dance background I was itching to perform again.

So I got a voice coach, put on dance shoes and walked into an audition. This weekend and next weekend I’m on stage at @waynetheatre in White Christmas 🎄 !

It has been a lot of time away from home and a lot of work alongside a full time job and full time parenting and full time “spousing.” But I am beyond grateful for this experience.

I don’t think I am good enough to go far with this, but I have so much fun and feel fulfilled by it - and that’s all I need.

These guys crawled all over everything in search of watermelon. Some of the folks in our group were a little freaked out. I thought it was a blast!

Traveling has shaped who I am in so many ways - to see how other humans live, to understand how many choices are available on Earth, to see who does it better and who is under the heavy burden of poverty and repression. Travel has made me realize the hopes and dreams I have for a nation and a society.

Travel changes you.

I shared what we did in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland on our website.

It’s not too deep, nothing remarkable. It’s a checklist of things to do
✔️underground waterfalls
✔️above ground waterfalls
✔️walking the path underneath the mountains

But it was lovely to take a moment to remember.

Lauterbrunnen was great. I feel lucky to have seen simple, old Swiss chalets that offered a different lifestyle.

I’ve never regretted my travel experiences and what I’ve seen.

I would say that it wasn’t until Eskisehir in Türkiye that we started to really grasp the warmth and vivacity of the Turkish culture. This was a smaller town, more bohemian and artisan in some ways, but it was bustling with people who were so kind. We had generous offers of food - and lots of tea.

Eskisehir has a row of old homes that have been restored and painted vibrant colors; there are art galleries; people sit outside at the tea house for hours and great each other happily; the open air markets are a feast for the senses.

Eskisehir was a great place to explore.

The thing about taking this @intrepidtravel basic tour was that it led me to visit places of Türkiye I probably wouldn’t have picked on my own- like Ankara.

Ankara is the capital of Türkiye and a busy, bustling city. It isn’t designed for the tourist, it is designed for the citizen. And we learned a lot by being here.

After a morning of museums and mausoleums, @lifewith2superheroes and I walked (like - A LOT) and saw all parts of Ankara.

… the city’s active mosque (where the women pray upstairs behind privacy screens), street stalls where you buy your washer/dryer unit and a couch to match, the old castle on a hill with extraordinary cobbled streets twisting underneath…

And, of course, we had to end with the nation’s beer.

I am glad this tour itinerary got me outside the typical tourist locations (ie, Cappadocia, Istanbul). Ankara was a completely different insight into what Türkiye is today, its identity as the modern republic it shaped into 100 years ago.

Deep underground near Cappadocia there are entire $Deep underground near Cappadocia there are entire “cities” carved into and through the rock. These labyrinths weave and twist. You get from space to space through tunnels too small to stand up in. As you go deeper into the earth, it gets warmer. The people who made these made vents so that fresh air circulates, but it can feel suffocating. We were at least 4 stories underground, but experts guess that they’ve only uncovered a fraction of what is there. Also wild: there are dozens of these cities! The people didn’t live here full time, but escaped enemies here. The tunnels were made small so that shields couldn’t be used by any invading, storming enemy soldiers. But they were prepared to stay there for awhile if necessary. There is no record of how long people actually lived down here. What do you think?
