When I look back on February, the experiences are what are etched on my heart. (As usual.) I am sure we bought stuff, and I know I read a lot of books, but February was spectacular because of the amazing memories we created.
One of those adventures was “epic” and big, but the rest were not. Most were easily available, not that expensive, and worth it. It just took some creativity to make them happen. It is a great reminder as to why I continue to strive to dig deep into creativity and find ways to live a family life we love (and to remember it’s fun, too!).
Here were some of the ways we creatively managed to create a family life full of memories in February:

Old School Experiences
This surely was more fun for me than my children (I think). One wintry Friday we headed out to a roller skating rink with the cousins, where we all put wheels on our feet.Â
I remember this as being so easy! I spent hours at roller skating rink birthday parties (as all good children of the 80s did) and I don’t remember roller skating being hard. But my kid were bruised, battered, and a tiny bit frustrated. Still, they asked to go again.
A Weekend in Bedford, Virginia
We spend a lot of time at Smith Mountain Lake, but rarely get off the water to head into “town.” Taking advantage of a free place to stay for a much-needed getaway, we spent some time in Bedford, Virginia.
This little town had a surprising amount of activity – certainly not the sleepy little place I remember growing up.
We hiked Sharptop Mountain, ate at Beale’s Brewery, and visited the National D-Day Memorial.
Big Sky, Montana
I will, of course, share a full article and travelogue on Big Sky. But this trip did not go as planned for a variety of reasons. Still, it was a beautiful part of the country that I feel so blessed to have seen. It also made me realize that even I have a limit as to outdoor adventuring when the temperatures drop into the -20s!
My February Tending List
My Powersheets helped me intentionally spend February. (You can get yours here, and no need to wait for the start of the year! Spring is a great time to refresh and start living intentionally.)
Spending five days in Montana made some of the goals harder to reach, but I also have a lot of grace because these are just guidelines, not requirements, I am setting for my life. I want to spend my time on the things that I love and that matter to me.
And overall, in February, that happened. As I process a month that is usually filled with the worst of the winter doldrums, I see joy and happy memories. For that, I am grateful.
We are now coming up on a season that holds hope, renewal, Easter, daffodils, and putting flowers all over my back porch. I can’t wait to enjoy the trip that is family life as we enter into spring.
